National Poetry Month

Inspired by the success of Black History Month and Women's History Month, the Academy of American Poets met in 1995 to discuss putting together a monthlong celebration of poetry. This led to the first National Poetry Month being held in 1996 as both an appreciation of poetry and as a way to increase awareness of its importance. The celebration has continued every April, leading to recurring celebrations like the launching of Poem-a=Day--a publishing of a new poem every day on the website Poets.org--and the Dear Poet project, which invites students to read and write poems with the possibility of being published on Poets.org.
