Fake News

A general guide about the characteristics of fake news, how and why it spreads, and how to verify information.

Imposter Accounts

Disinformation can present itself in different formats. An example can be an imposter social media account. These accounts, known as spoof accounts mimic celebrities or established brand names in order to solicit your information. Oftentimes they will steal photos and biographies from the real page. You may recognize them if you see the celebrities that you follow call them out and warn you on social media. Spotting imposter accounts can be tricky, but with a little detective work you can verify whether the source is the actual individual you are intending to follow. A general rule of thumb is to check whether the account has been verified (the little blue check next to handle names on twitter).
