The term fake news gained popularity during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. However, the evaluative processes of information searching and retrieval have long been skewed by the overwhelming amount of information of the internet. Fake news is often attributed to disinformation, or the purposeful publication of false information intended to deceive consumers of information for financial gain.
