What Was Art Underground?

What was Art Underground?

Beginning in November 2013, the space between the Writing Collaboratory and the Print Shop on the lower level of Taylor Memorial Library was home to various art exhibitions by students and faculty, dubbed Art Underground. Previous library director Timothy Domick's first came up with the idea, wanting patrons of the library to be surrounded by artwork that passionate students created. Hyo-Chong Yoo, Professor Emeritus of Visual Arts, volunteered to exhibit her watercolor paintings for the first show, before curating later shows for her students. Art Underground was a beloved fixture of the library until the end of 2016, allowing students to showcase their work and generate more interest for art on campus.

Hyo-Chong Yoo Watercolors - November-December 2013

This series by Professor Yoo was built around a new technique of watercolor painting and the idea of art as therapy. Yoo was struggling with the loss of her mother and used painting in a different style to cope. Previously, she had used more water and wider brush strokes, but during this period, she used the paint to layer colors, resulting in a more solid, yet soft and calm atmosphere.

Landscape Illustrations - May 2018

The above works were highlights of Professor Barbara Pohl's 2018 Graphic Design course, VAR-2001, curated by Professor Hyo-Chung Yoo. Here, students used the software program Illustrator to turn a photograph into a digital illustration. In the process, they learned the tools to effectively illustrate, provide effects, and render an illustrative design. Once the design was completed, the photograph was removed from the design.

The below works were created by students in Professor Pohl's 2016 Graphic Design course, selected because they showed a varied range of print design topics. This project taught students to understand the relationship between typesetting, design, and imagery, while learning how to visually communicate a message and develop a fluidity with the software applications needed to execute their goals.
