Citing a Newspaper Article

The basics of a reference list entry for a newspaper article include:

  • Author or authors. (surname is followed by first initials)
  • Year and publication date
  • Article title.
  • Newspaper title (in italics)
  • Page number. (if applicable)
  • Location (DOI, permalink, or URL)
  • The first line of each citation is left adjusted. Every subsequent line is indented 5-7 spaces. (hanging indent)

 

Example:

Guarino, B. (2017, December 4). How will humanity react to alien life? Psychologists have some predicitons. The Washington Post.      https//washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2017/12/04/how-will-humanity-react-to-alien-life-psychologists-have-some-predictions

Parenthetical citation: (Guarino, 2017)

Narrative citation: Guarino (2017)

  • As many newspapers are daily publications, the date of the newspaper must be included.
  • Check with your lecturer/teacher if they would like you to include the online newspaper database and access date.
